Gal Costa ‎– Agua Viva - 1978

Warmly jazzy and beautifully lyrical work from Gal Costa – a bit of a departure from the darkness of her earlier albums, but still plenty darn great! There's a really fluid sensibility to most of the tunes here – one that matches the title and cover image of the record – and which comes mostly from the well-crafted arrangements by Wagner Tiso and Perinho Albuquerque. A number of tunes use electric keyboards mixed with raspier guitar – a nice blend of instruments that still gives even the smoother tracks a bit of an edge. Titles include "Mae" by Caetano Veloso, "Cade" by Milton Nascimento, "Pois E" by Jobim, and "O Gosto Do Amor" by Luiz Gonzaga Jr – plus "Olhos Verdes", "Folhetim", "O Gosto Do Amor", and "A Mulher".

Gal Costa ‎– Fantasia - 1981

Image
Gal's in the prime of her sexy diva style here – singing in a sweet warm style with smooth jazzy arrangements that bring out a whole new side of her career. Obviously, the album's not as groundbreaking as some of her early work – but the quality is very high, and Gal's voice is always wonderful, no matter what the setting. Arrangements are by Gilson Peranzzetta and Lincoln Olivetti – and titles include "Meu Bem, Meu Mal", "Canta Brasil", "Roda Baiana", "Festa Do Interior", "Massa Real", and "Estrela, Estrela".

Gal Costa ‎– Baby Gal - 1983

Image
It's the early 80s, and Gal's working with a style that's sure a lot sweeter and slicker than her earlier albums – but her voice is still fantastic, and we can't help liking the catchy tunes on the album, which are produced in a style that's similar to some of the modern soul-oriented work that Marcos Valle was doing around the same time. There's a lot of electric keyboards and percussion, but Gal's voice is still out front, singing in a lovely touching manner. Includes a nice remake of the classic "Baby" performed with backing vocals by Roupa Nova, plus the tracks "Ruma Louca", "Olhos Do Coracoa", "Mil Perdoes", "Sutis Diferencas", "Grande Final" and "Sim Ou Nao".

Maria Bethânia - Dezembros - 1988 - Braziloid pressing EUA

One of Maria Bethania's best albums of the 80s – a set that has the singer almost hitting a more personal, more intimate mode – working with music from Caetano Veloso that helps bring in a closeness that Bethania was sometimes missing in her sound! The approach is a bit jazzy at times – with warm keyboard currents that allow Maria to trip lightly on the vocal tip, while still moving with the kind of sophisticated songwriting that serves her best – and Caetano also sings a bit on the record, as does Milton Nascimento. Titles include "Anos Dourados", "Doce Espera", "Yorubahia", "Gostoso Demais", "Tranchan", "Errei Sim", and "Cancoes E Momentos. I got this sealed album and I never had a reason to open since I got the RCA version that is open and the cd version also open. I got the album mainly because I wanted Maria Bethania Errei Sim version, in my opinion it is the best version of that song.

Maria Bethânia - Drama Luz da noite 1973

Image
Proof that Maria Bethania must have been one of the most exciting Brazilian artists to see live in the 70s! Although a concert set, the album's got a sophistication and sound that matches some of the best MPB studio work of the early 70s – with a slightly messed-up quality to the backings that mix together jazz with more abstract psychedelic influences! Accompaniment is by the core Terra Trio, plus Chiquito and Pedro Dos Santos – and as on other records from this time, Maria sings with a sense of power that's really tremendous! Titles include "Iansa", "Drama", "Formosa", "Baioque", "Movimento Dos Barcos", "Soneto", "Bodas De Prata", and "Atras Da Porta" – as well as some spoken passages. My copy of this album looks like was never played. I played once, cover, inserts and album in great shape.

Maria Bethania ‎– Álibi - 1978

Image
Strong work by Maria Bethania from the late 70s – a session that has her tightening up her sound a bit more than before, but without any loss of her sense of drama or emotion! The album was recorded with a number of different musical backgrounds, including many small group settings with guitar by Rosinha De Valenca – an artist we love on her own, and who adds in a nicely personal touch to this album's mix of strings, keyboards, and rootsier percussion. The guitar works nicely with Maria's voice, and is perhaps second in the mix behind her singing – giving the songs a nice focus even when the backings are quite large. Songs are a mix of tunes by Gilberto Gil, Chico Buarque, Caetano Veloso, and other likely suspects – and titles include "Calice", "Interior", "De Todas As Maneiras", "O Meu Amor", "Ronda", and "Diamante Verdadeiro".

Maria Bethânia - Talismã - 1980

Image
A laid back, pretty record from Maria Bethania. A lot of the tracks were written by Caetano Veloso and he and Gilberto Gil make a guest appearance on the album. Tracks include "Vida Real", "Cansei De Ilusoes", "Pele", "Noite De Um Verao De Sonho", "Amo Tanto Viver", and "Talisma".       One of Bethania's best album, from front and back cover, poster to each song. A must have album, i have two copies, one of them never played in great conditions. great shining gold letters on cover.   um dos melhores discos de Bethania, da capa, poster a cada musica. um disco que voce tem que ter. Eu tenho dois e um deles nunca tocado e em perfeito estado. Otimo detalhe na capa com letras em ouro brilhando.

Maria Bethânia - LP Mel - 1979

Image
A gentler, more laidback album that some of Maria Bethania's more dramatic efforts from the early 70s – but still a pretty great little record, served up with a sense of poise and power that few of her contemporaries could match! Backings are arranged by Perinho Albuquerque, in a way that's often relatively spare, but still full at the bottom – letting the vocals take most of the top of the sound, in a way that makes for a nicely personal quality to the record. Tracks include numbers written by Joyce, Caetano Veloso, and Luiz Gonzaga Jr – with titles that include "Queda D'Agua", "Mel", "Gota De Sangue", "Da Cor Brazileira", and "Ela E Eu"                                                          ...

Maria Bethania Ao Vivo - (1968) 1985 pressing

Image
One of Maria Bethania's first albums, and a beautiful set of live recordings – with a vibe that's a lot more uptempo and swinging than some of her later work! The style here almost has traces of bossa – a lighter, groovier feel at times than some of the more emotive modes that Bethania became known for during her run of 70s MPB. Backing here is by the bossa-esque Terra Trio, and they accompany her deep rich voice nicely on tracks like "Marina", "Carinhoso", "Marginalia II", "Ele Valava Nisso Todo Dia", and a great version of Caetano Veloso's "Baby".  (Brazilian pressing, from 1985.) Tracklist Marginália II 2:32 Se Todos Fossem Iguais A Você 2:30 Lama 2:07 Baby 3:25 Fósforo Queimado 2:18 Com Açúcar, Com Afeto 3:56 Ponto De Oxossi 2:35 Meiga Presença 2:12 Irene 1:50 Nada Além 3:00 Carinhoso 3:09 Marina 4:04 Molambo 2:10 Maria, Maria 2:18

Gal Costa, O melhor de - 1989

Gal Costa - Lua de mel como o diabo gosta - 1987

Gal Costa - Gal Tropical - 1979

Image
A nice batch of tracks by Gal, with some very nice 70s jazzy electric backing. The album features a nice remake of "India", plus the tracks "Forca Estranha", "Olha", "Meu Nome E Gal", "Balance", and "Samba Rasgado".

Gal Costa ‎– Aquarela Do Brasil - 1980

Image
Gal pays tribute to the great work of Ary Barroso in this moody set of tracks arranged by Roberto Menescal and Perna Froes. The sound is similar to some of Gal's other smooth LPs from the time, with a nice undercurrent of jazz that works well with Barroso's compositions. Caetano Veloso joins Gal on a duet of "No Tabuleiro Da Bahiana", and other tracks include "E Luxo So", "Folha Morta", "Camisa Amarela", "Aquarela Do Brasil", and "Novo Amor". The copy I have looks like was never played. Great album gatefolder with a beautiful poster

Gal Costa ‎– Plural - 1990

Image
Leo Gandelman produced this one, and it's got sort of a modern jazzy sound that sits well with some of Gal's singing on here, especially on standards like "I Didn't Know What Time It Was" and "Begin the Beguine". Tracklist Salvador Não Inerte / Ladeira Do Pelô 2:50 A Verdadeira Baiana 3:30 Begin The Beguine 4:13 Fon Fon 3:05 Eu Acredito 4:13 Holofotes 4:07 Cabelo 3:30 Brilho De Beleza 5:02 Alguém Me Disse 3:30 Nua Idéia (Leila XII) 3:02 Zanzando 3:30 I Didn’t Know What Time It Was     4:41
